Well, I guess I'm a masochist making a techno-political point then. But, since your argument has fallen to name calling (as many weak ones do), here is one name you cannot deny me...

Author.

One who happily authored this book on an iPad, published it, and then sold a crap ton of them. Then, who went and wrote more than one-third of his next published book (http://minimalmac.com/book) on an iPhone.

So, while you are sitting around arguing with people on the Internet about how the work is done, I'm here doing it and shipping.

Nobody, at least nobody intelligent, has said you *can't* create content on an iPad. Or iPhone, or Android phone or tablet.

But it's not a good tool for the job. I can hammer a nail with an iPhone too, with that cool metal band antenna. As long as I don't hold it wrong.

For serious head-down content creation using words, a keyboard, a real physical full-size keyboard matching your hand size, is still the best solution.

This may be a niche where the Windows Surface tablet with the hinged keyboard option may have a chance. Yes, there are keyboards for iPads. Heck, I have a fold-out keyboard somewhere in the house for my old Handspring Visor PalmOS handheld PDA. But let's use the right tool for the job.

Now, should you use the iPad, iPhone, Nexus phone (if Apple doesn't sue you) when you're out and the muse strikes? Absolutely, yes. Should you write a whole book, or even just a chapter on it as your tool of choice? Only if you're a masochist or you're making a technopolitical point.

About 30% of my first book was written on the first generation iPad.

I wrote the book partly because I thought the pundits who panned the iPad when Steve Jobs introduced it (on my birthday no less) were totally wrong. I figured I'd eat my own dog food by creating a significant portion of the book, including graphics on the iPad. At that time, most apps were fairly rudimentary as devs tried to find their way on the new platform. Nevertheless, it was a thrill.

Cheers,
Deon Robinson
